The US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) issued patent number 8,055,995 to Suresh Sambandam, Mani Doraisamy, Dinesh Varadharajan, & Prasanna Jaganathan from OrangeScape for an invention in the area of “Rule Engine”. The Patent is called “System and method of defining a hierarchical data model and related computation and instruction rules using spreadsheet like user interface”. It's not the type of news that will overly worry Sony, but is slightly embarrassing nonetheless. During Nintendo's keynote speech at GDC, the company's president Satoru Iwata revealed that the number of Wii Balance Boards sold is almost the same as the number of Sony PS3s. The gaming industry may have been huge in 2008, but it seems that gaming developers and publishers can’t keep up with the recession as companies are either shutting down studios or downsizing.
