Over the last several years, obtaining a tattoo has become a popular decision for individuals of all ages.  There are a number of reasons why an individual may get a tattoo, including for sentimental reasons or because they desire a particular design.  It is important to remember that a tattoo is a permanent work of art for your body, so the tattoo designs should be carefully considered to ensure that it will be one that you will enjoy for years to come.

Many individuals choose to get a tattoo to commemorate a momentous event in their lives, such as a marriage, a death, or a birth.  These are life changing events that will continue to have a significant impact on the life of the individual for many years and the tattoo chosen will typically illustrate the event as seen in the eyes of the individual.  These tattoos are deeply meaningful and should be chosen carefully to produce the desired effect in the mind and the heart of the person sporting the tattoo.

Individuals that end up unhappy with the tattoo that they have chosen are often the individuals that chose their tattoo based on what was popular at the moment or succumbed to peer pressure from their friends to get a tattoo that they didn’t really want.  There are thousands of people sporting generic tribal tattoos, fairies, dragons, and cartoon characters because that was what was popular at the time they decided to get a tattoo.  As these individuals become older, they realize that there is no meaning attached to their body art and seek to have the tattoo removed.

The individual must also remember to choose a tattoo design that is visually appealing and will remain appealing over time.  For example, even though the traditional symbols of death are skulls, skeletons, and often frightening images, is that really what you want to display as a tribute to a loved one that you have lost?  A more appealing body art memorial will incorporate the items that the person used to love or images that bring back the memory of the lost individual into its design. A cross tattoo might be a far better choice as it has religious meaning as well as imagery that won’t go out of style.

Choosing the right type of tattoo can be a difficult decision when based on personality and ideals instead of being based on the whim of the moment.  To obtain a tattoo that will continue to be enjoyable over the years, the individual will need to carefully consider what they want to incorporate into the tattoo and make sure they are choosing the images that they want, not what someone else is trying to convince them to get.  Tattoos are permanent body art that cannot be removed painlessly or easily and individuals who would like to obtain a tattoo should keep this fact in mind when choosing the tattoo image.
